The Lady Raiders broke two Loudoun County High School Swim Team Records and earned a state qualifying time in the 200 Medley Relay in their meet against Dominion High School this past Friday, January 29, 2010, at Claude Moore Recreation Center, in Sterling, Va.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of these girls,” said Head Coach Nick Grzeda. “We’ve been working on starts, turns, and stroke technique in order to get this final relay a qualifying time for States.” Grzeda is referring to the Lady Raiders already having the 200 and 400 Yard Freestyle Relays with state qualifying times for the season.

The Lady Raiders who earned the state qualifying time/LCHS Swim Team Record were Senior Captain Julie Strange, Sophie Newton (So.), Katie Russell (So.), and Adrienne Rivera (Fr.) and their time was 2:02.00.

The Boys fell to Dominion High School but had a great start going into the meet with Senior Captains Nick Cechak and Will Shoemaker, Joe Gibson (Jr.), and Jake Koenig (So.) taking first in the 200 Yard Medley Relay in 1:50.81 missing the state qualifying time in this event by two hundredths of a second.

Freshman Kyle Bowers placed third in the 200 Yard Freestyle in 2:14.78 while Junior Jay Wareham also took third in the 200 Yard IM in 2:21.75. Bowers would later take third in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 1:10.53 as well.

Jake Koenig (So.) earned two first place finishes for the Raiders in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 1:00.28, and 100 Yard Breaststroke 1:09.57, the two events that he hopes to place in at the District Meet next weekend. He has already qualified for States in the 100 Yard Breaststroke and the two Raiders relays.

Senior Captain Nick Cechak took second place in the 100 Yard Freestyle in 56.12 and Senior Captain Will Shoemaker tied for third place in the same event capturing a time of 56.78.

Nick McCord (Fr.) and Chris Stowell (Jr.) earned first and second place in the 500 Yard Freestyle in 5:31.88 and 5:57.83 for the Raiders and Joe Gibson (Jr.) took third in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:09.13.

Strange would later take third place in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:15.06.

Senior Captain Kelly McGrath took third place in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 1:16.59 while Sophie Newton and Katie Russell took second and third places in the 100 Yard Freestyle in 58.89 and 59.43. Sophie Newton again swam back to back events and broke her own school record in the 500 Yard Freestyle for the second week in a row. Her time was 5:33.12. Katie Russell took second place in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:08.99, the first time she has swam this event this season.

Adrienne Rivera earned a personal best time in the 100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:18.68 taking first place for the Lady Raiders.

“I am especially impressed with Adrienne’s performance tonight,” said Assistant Coach Jess Fry-Jones. “She has focused hard on improving her turns and stroke technique in the 100 Yard Breaststroke and she had break through tonight which guaranteed her some swims in the post season.”

The Lady Raiders 400 Yard Freestyle Relay captured first place in the final event of the evening in 4:02.16. The relay was made up of Senior Captain Julie Strange, Elise Rivera (Sr.), Sophie Newton (So.), and Katie Russell (So.).

The Raiders will be at the District Swim Meet at Claude Moore Recreation Center in Sterling, on Friday, February 5. “Although our regular season record may not show it, I believe that this team has the potential of placing top three in the Dulles District next week,” said Grzeda. “I don’t want to jinx it, but I also think that LCHS will see their first District Champion in Swimming this year as well.”

Loudoun County's Kain commits to Naval Academy

Washington Post at All Met Sports

By Matt Brooks

Friday, January 29, 2010

Loudoun County senior guard Alissa Kain, a key contributor in the Raiders' 2008-09 Virginia AA Division 4 championship run, has committed to continue her education and basketball career at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.

A four-year varsity player, the 5-9 guard became a valuable weapon on both ends of the floor midway through her junior season. After averaging 5.3 points as a sophomore, she was the team's second leading scorer last year, upping her average to 16.5 points per contest. Kain continued to increase her production down the stretch, averaging 23.8 points, 9.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists in the region and state playoffs. And in Loudoun County's 63-47 victory over Turner Ashby in the state final, she scored a game-high 23 to go along with eight rebounds and five assists, to help lead the Raiders to their first ever state championship.

But Kain's most memorable moment may have come as a sophomore when she picked up a loose ball near the top of the key and hoisted a shot that bounced off the front of the rim and through the net as time expired to give the Raiders a dramatic 48-47 victory over arch-rivals Freedom-South Riding in the Dulles District tournament final.

This season, Kain is averaging 13.8 points for the No. 18 Raiders (13-2, 7-1 AA Dulles), who remain one of the top AA teams in the state and have won seven straight games. With 958 points in her career, Kain is set to crack 1,000 before the season is out. To date, Kain's career record with the Raiders is 76-19. She committed Dec. 21 and will attend the Naval Academy Prep School her first year.

The addition of Newton’s two State Qualifying times this week (in the 500 Yard Freestyle in 5:33.83 taking first place and the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:03.69 taking second place) gives her six State Qualifying times in individual events for the season; those events are the 200 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Butterfly, 200 Yard Individual Medley, and 50 Yard Freestyle. Sophie has also helped the Lady Raiders 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays State Qualifying times this season.

“Sophie is an amazing swimmer with a vast amount of talent,” said Head Coach Nick Grzeda. “It is not often that such a well rounded swimmer comes your way; especially one who is so humble and yet steadfast in succeeding on her terms. I am excited to see what she will be capable of in two years when she is a senior.”

Sophie now has five individual LCHS School Records as well as one relay: the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.

Sophomore Jake Koenig earned his first individual state qualifying time in the 100 Yard Breaststroke narrowly defeating Potomac Falls HS’s Eoghan (pronounced Owen) Foley with a time of 1:07.09. This will be the second time that Jake has broken the LCHS School Record this season in this event.

“Jake truly devoted himself to this race tonight,” said Raiders Assistant Coach Jess Fry- Jones. “Before going to the block, he said, “I’m getting the State Cut,” and he did! There was no one that was going to distract him from doing so.”

Koenig (So.) also earned a win in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 59.92 for the evening with teammate Courtner Clark taking a close second place in 1:00.65.

The Raider Boys fell to the Potomac Falls 200 Medley Relay at the beginning of the meet, but Senior Captain Will Shoemaker took second place in the 200 Yard Freestyle in 2:04.69 capturing a personal best time in this event. The Lady Raiders 400 Yard Freestyle Relay easily took first place in 4:02.02; the relay was made up of Senior Captain Julie Strange, Elise Rivera (Sr.), Sophie Newton (So.), and Katie Russell (So.).

“I was pleased to see some of the Lady Raiders stepping up and taking their swims seriously,” said Fry-Jones. “Elise Rivera has been working extremely hard the past few weeks and it shows in the past two meets.”

Next weekend the Raiders have two meets scheduled: Friday, January 29, at Claude Moore Recreation Center in Sterling, Va., at 5:30 PM against Dominion High School, and Saturday, January 30, at Ida Lee Recreation Center in Leesburg, Va., at 6:00 PM against Briar Woods High School.
