Boosters and Athletic Dept. Honor Senior Athletes for 2008-09

The LCHS Athletic Booster Club and the Athletic Department would like to recognize and congratulate the following student-athletes.

2008-09 LCHSABC Scholarships & Athletes of the Year

Female Scholar Athlete Scholarship: Liz Asai
Liz served as a captain on the Competition Cheer Squad and was All District in Gymnastics. She is the personification of being able to balance an extremely rigorous academic load of AP classes, the Academy of Science and extracurricular activities. She is currently ranked in the top two students of the Class of 2009 with a cumulative GPA of 4.31. Liz will be attending the University of Virginia in the fall.

Male Scholar Athlete Scholarship: Peter Satagaj
Peter was a key member of the 2006 State Champion Tennis team, winning several crucial matches during the playoffs. He rose to be the #1 seed on the team this year, where he reached the district finals. He was also a member of the Cross Country team, and his work ethic and attitude were invaluable to his coaches and teammates. He has balanced these achievements with outstanding academic success, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 4.14. He has attended the academy of science and takes part in numerous AP classes. Peter will attend Carnegie Mellon in the fall.

Female Athlete Scholarship: Rochelle Latka
Rochelle has been a member of our two time state championship winning VB program and has also been named All State in softball as a centerfielder. This year she added the honor of being named All Met in softball. She currently holds 4 VHSL records in softball and will represent LCHS at the VHSCA All Star game in July. Her high level of achievement on the fields and courts extended into the classroom where she maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.13. Rochelle will attend William and Mary in the fall.

Male Athlete Scholarship: Bret Tagg
Bret is a three sport athlete, who actually competed (and lettered) in four different sports during his tenure at LCHS; Cross Country, Football, Basketball and Baseball. As a Junior, he was the starting shortstop on the baseball team and the starting shooting guard in basketball. He decided to try football as a senior, earned a starting position and caught his first TD catch vs. Dominion. Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury later in that same game that ended his high school sports career. True to his character, Bret maintained a positive attitude and became a volunteer asst. coach during the basketball season, as well as assisting the baseball team in the spring. Bret has maintained a GPA of 3.87 and will be attending Brigham Young University in the fall.

Female Athlete of the Year: Kerry Sarver
In an age of specialization, Kerry has gone ‘retro’ by playing three sports and rising to the top of each. She is a three sport letter winner and has earned 11 Varsity Letters out of a possible 12 HS seasons. In 2004 the tradition started of hanging pictures of Region and State Title winners in the gym foyer. We have hung 5 pictures for girl’s athletics during that time, and she is the only person who appears in all of them. During her four years at LCHS she has helped her teams to win 6 District Regular Season Titles, 7 District Tournament Titles, 4 Region Championships, 1 State Runner Up, and 3 State Championships. Kerry had the rare opportunity of participating in four state championship games at the Seigal Center in Richmond during her athletic career. She also capped off her senior high school career in the spring by winning the District Title in Tennis Doubles. This year alone, her teams went a combined 67-6. Her four year record in basketball was 92-19 and the volleyball team posted an 83-4 record over her three years on Varsity.

Male Athlete of the Year: Joe Bushrod
Joe has approached LCHS athletics as a ‘warrior’, in the sense that he is someone who will never back down from a challenge and just flat hates to lose. He became a starter on the Varsity football and basketball teams as a sophomore. He endured losing seasons in both, but decided that was not going to be his legacy. He, as much as any other student-athlete, was responsible for the turnarounds of both programs. During his senior year, he led two teams into the post season for the first time in a decade; he quarterbacked the football team to a first round playoff game, and as a point guard led the basketball team to the region Semi-Finals. Joe was named All District in both sports for his efforts.

Congratulations to all our Senior-Athletes.
We wish you well in your post high school pursuits!

Boosters and Athletic Dept. Honor Senior Athletes for 2007-08

The LCHS Athletic Booster Club and the Athletic Department would like to recognize and congratulate the following student-athletes.

2007-08 LCHSABC Scholarships & Athletes of the Year

Female Scholar Athlete Scholarship: Sara Reilly - A key component in the State Championship VB team this fall.  Her effort, enthusiasm, and leadership were immeasurable.  It is safe to say that she puts the same effort into her academic work as well.  While balancing 4 AP classes, numerous clubs and activities, and being captain of the Volleyball Team, she has maintained a GPA of 4.06.  She plans to attend VT next fall and study to be a Veterinarian.

Male Scholar Athlete Scholarship: Nathan Latka - Has balanced being a key contributor of our Boy’s tennis team while maintaining an unheard of 4.24 GPA.  He has been a member of numerous clubs, honor societies, and actively participates in plays and in the Choral Dept.  He is currently taking 5 AP courses and spends what little free time he has interning at a local Architecture firm, something he hopes will help him next year when he enters Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture.

Female Athlete Scholarship: Libby Messina - This student-athlete personifies that term.  A multi sport letter winner, she has participated in the Volleyball, Track, and Gymnastics programs.  She also has maintained an outstanding 4.05 cumulative GPA over her four years at LCHS.  She is involved in numerous activities in and out of school and is an asset to our school and her family.  She plans to attend High Point University this fall.

Male Athlete Scholarship: Nathan Case - Another example of someone who personifies excellence both in the classroom and on the fields.  Nathan is a four year member of the Boy’s Lacrosse Team.  He provided leadership, often through his actions, as much as through his words.  He is active in the school and in the community and often used Lacrosse as a way to escape the pressures of 5 AP Classes.  Through it all, he has maintained a GPA of 4.14.

Female Athlete of the Year: Morgan Petkovich - Morgan typifies what athletics is all about.  It is a parallel to real life.  Sometimes things don’t come easy and often, your hard work is not rewarded immediately.  She went out for her chosen sport and much to her parents surprise, she actually made the team.  She continued to work hard and became a key contributor as a junior, but yet went totally ignored in honors by the district, region and state.  Finally, however…it all started to pay off.  She was noticed by many at summer tournaments and then helped lead the Raiders to a VHSL State Title while earning All State Honors.  She was named the All Met Player of the Year by the Washington Post for her play. She balanced this with excellence in the classroom, maintaining at 3.8 GPA and being active in school activities. She will continue her athletic career at Villanova in the fall, where she EARNED a full scholarship to play Volleyball.

Male Athlete of the Year: Jack Lewis - Jack defines what being 'well rounded' means.  He is a two sport varsity athlete, a state qualifier on our forensics team, and an award winning actor on our school’s drama team.  He was named All District in football this year, where he provided much needed Senior Leadership and helped turn our season around.  He is a multi-time state qualifier in Track and Field.  He was first in 3 events at the Dulles District track meet, and placed in 3 at the Virginia State Track Championships.  If you have not seen him act, you are missing out…as he brings acertain flair to his roles that can not be taught.  He does all these things while maintaining a 3.7 GPA over his four years at LCHS.  He will be attending Pomona College in California next year.

Congratulations to all our Senior-Athletes.
We wish you well in your post high school pursuits!
